Cleaning: Wipe your measuring implement clean(ish) with a paper towel. If your shortening is particularly hard at room temperature, heat the scoop up a little bit. Repeat if necessary until it looks clean (it will still have a thin film). Then wash it with lots of hot water and soap. The point is that the stuff is solid grease, and you need boatloads of very hot water and soap if that's all you're going to do to get rid of it.
This method works for cleaning out peanut butter jars (or, worse, tahini jars) and, with a little extra elbow grease, getting wax off utensils.
